Human rights development and training

BIHR’s development and training work focuses on supporting the development and application of human rights based approaches – in particular as a tool to tackle social exclusion, disadvantage and inequality.

The underpinning rationale for this work is that for domestic and international human rights to have meaning for or benefit everyone they need to be animated, understood, applied and claimed outside of the courtroom and by a much wider range of people and organisations.

Within this context our development and training work aims to build the capacity of those tackling injustice and inequality to use human rights based approaches in their work. This aim is supported by three main objectives:

  1. Strengthen the capacity of voluntary and community organisations to use human rights based approaches in their work.
  2. Support the development and use of human rights based approaches in the delivery of public services.
  3. Generate learning for policy and practice of the value and benefits of human rights approaches.

Our activities under these objectives fall into three main areas:

Training, consultancy and other practical supports

We provide in-house training, awareness-raising workshops, consultancy and other practical tools to a range of voluntary and community organisations and to providers of public services.

Projects

Our development and training work also includes a number of capacity building or development projects. Current projects underway or in development include:

Generating policy learning

Through our development and training we capture important evidence and policy learning from the direct experiences of disadvantaged groups as well as the organisations working with and for them, to support our policy and research programme.
